What It Does
The compressor is the engine of your refrigerator’s sealed cooling system. It pressurises refrigerant gas and circulates it through the condenser and evaporator coils. Without it, no cooling takes place.
Why It Fails
Compressors wear out over time, overheat due to dirty condenser coils, or fail prematurely because of electrical faults, refrigerant loss, or a failed start relay. They are one of the most stressed components in the appliance.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Fridge runs constantly but stays warm
- Clicking or humming sound from the back of the unit
- Compressor is hot to the touch but not cycling correctly
Estimated Part Cost
- Standard residential compressor: $140 – $540
- Premium or inverter compressor (Samsung, LG): $200 – $650
- Heavy-duty or large-capacity units: up to $740
Estimated Labour Cost
- Labour only: $150 – $400
- Full replacement (parts + labour + refrigerant recharge): $350 – $1,200
- High-end or built-in refrigerators can exceed $1,500
Repair or Replace?
If your fridge is under 7–8 years old and otherwise in good condition, compressor replacement can be worthwhile. For units over 10–12 years old, the total repair cost often approaches the price of a new refrigerator — replacement may be the smarter choice.
⚠️ Note: Only EPA Section 608 certified technicians may legally handle the refrigerant recovery and recharge involved in compressor replacement. This is never a DIY job.
