Extreme Ambient Temperature Warning — Sources and Solutions

An extreme ambient temperature warning means the sensor monitoring the environment around the refrigerator has detected conditions — either too hot or too cold — that fall outside the appliance’s rated operating range. At these extremes, the refrigerator either cannot maintain safe food temperatures or risks damaging its own components.

What Triggers This Error?

The ambient sensor reading falls below the minimum rated temperature (typically 10°C for standard domestic models) or above the maximum (typically 38–43°C depending on climate class).

Consequences of Extreme Ambient Temperatures

  • Too cold: The compressor may stop cycling (it reads the ambient as “cold enough”) leaving the freezer to warm up. In frost-free models, defrost cycles may become erratic.
  • Too hot: The compressor runs continuously and overheats trying to maintain set temperatures, reducing its lifespan and failing to keep food safe.

Common Sources

  • Garage or outbuilding installation: Ambient temperatures in unheated spaces drop well below 10°C in winter.
  • Hot kitchen placement: Installing the refrigerator next to a range, oven, or in direct sunlight raises the ambient dramatically.
  • Climate extremes: Extended heat waves push domestic ambient temperatures above the rated maximum.
  • Blocked ventilation: Even in a temperate room, blocking rear ventilation causes local ambient temperature around the compressor to soar.

Solutions

  • Relocate the refrigerator: Move it to a climate-controlled space within the manufacturer’s ambient temperature rating. This is the most reliable long-term solution.
  • Improve ventilation: Ensure clearance on all sides. Remove any objects stored on top of or directly behind the unit.
  • Install a garage-rated refrigerator: If a garage location is unavoidable, purchase a model specifically designed and rated for wider ambient temperature ranges.
  • Use a garage kit: Some manufacturers offer accessory heater kits for their models that prevent the compressor from shutting off in cold ambient conditions.
  • Reset after the environment normalizes: Once ambient temperature returns to within the rated range, perform a power cycle to clear the code and allow the appliance to resume normal operation.
