Water Leak & Drainage Codes — Sources and Solutions

Water leak and drainage codes indicate that the refrigerator has detected unexpected water inside or beneath the unit, that its drainage system is blocked, or that a collection tray has reached capacity. Left unaddressed, these faults cause water damage to floors, internal components, and food.

What Triggers These Errors?

These codes are triggered by water level sensors, drain blockage thermistors, or — in smart appliances — moisture sensors beneath the unit. Some codes in this category are inferred by the board from indirect evidence, such as ice buildup that points to a blocked drain.

Common Sources Across the Category

  • Clogged defrost drain: The most frequent cause. Melted frost cannot drain and pools inside the compartment.
  • Leaking water supply lines: Cracked inlet hoses or loose fittings leak water behind or beneath the unit.
  • Overfilling ice maker: A faulty water inlet valve floods the ice maker tray, spilling water.
  • Condensation management failure: Blocked drainage of door gasket condensation causes water to pool at the base.

General Solutions

  • Clear defrost drain tubes annually with warm water and a drain-clearing tool.
  • Inspect water supply hoses and fittings every 6–12 months for signs of wear or weeping.
  • Ensure the refrigerator is level — both side-to-side and front-to-back — so drainage flows correctly.
  • Check the drain pan beneath the unit has not cracked.
