Refrigerant (Cooling Gas): Estimated Price & Replacement Labour Cost
What It Does
Refrigerant is the working fluid of the cooling system. It cycles between liquid and gas states as it absorbs heat from inside the fridge and releases it outside. Modern household refrigerators use R-134a (HFC) or R-600a (isobutane), depending on the manufacturer and model.
Why It Needs Recharging
Refrigerant operates in a closed loop and should not deplete under normal conditions. If the level is low, it always indicates a leak somewhere in the sealed system. The leak must be found and repaired before a recharge will be effective.
Signs the System Is Low on Refrigerant
- Fridge running warm despite compressor operating
- Ice building up in unusual locations
- Higher-than-normal electricity bills
- Oily residue near coil connections or lines
Estimated Cost of Refrigerant
- R-134a (wholesale): $4 – $10 per lb
- R-134a (installed, including technician handling): $50 – $110 per lb
- R-600a (isobutane): specialist handling required; similar installed pricing
- A typical household fridge holds only a small charge (50–250g), so refrigerant cost alone is modest
Estimated Total Service Cost
- Leak detection + repair + recharge: $200 – $500
- If sealed-system component (coil, compressor) also needs replacement: $500 – $1,200+
⚠️ Legal Requirement: Only EPA Section 608 certified technicians may purchase and handle refrigerants. Attempting a DIY recharge is both unsafe and illegal.
