A non-functional ice maker is one of the most common complaints among refrigerator owners. Multiple issues can prevent the ice maker from producing ice, ranging from simple user errors to mechanical or electrical failures.
Signals
Signals that your ice maker is not working include an empty ice bin, the ice maker arm being in the “up” (off) position, or the water dispenser working while no new ice is produced.
Solutions
Check the ice maker arm to ensure it is in the lowered (on) position. Inspect the water supply line for kinks, freezes, or disconnections that may prevent water from reaching the ice maker. Replace the water filter if it is clogged, as a blocked filter can reduce water pressure below the minimum required to fill the ice tray. Verify that the freezer temperature is at or below 10°F (-12°C), as ice will not form properly at higher temperatures. Test the water inlet valve for proper operation; low water pressure or a failed valve solenoid can prevent water from entering the ice maker. Finally, reset the ice maker by pressing and holding the test/reset button (location varies by model) for 3–5 seconds.
Prevention Tips
To maintain your ice maker, regularly check the water supply line and filter for clogs or damage. Ensure the freezer temperature is set correctly and that the ice maker arm is in the “on” position. Periodically inspect the ice maker and its components for signs of wear or damage.
