Compressor Failure — Solutions
A failed compressor means the refrigeration cycle has completely stopped. This is the most severe mechanical fault a refrigerator can experience.
Signals
- Fridge completely warm; freezer not freezing
- No humming sound from the compressor
- Clicking sound at startup followed by silence (failed start attempt)
- Compressor hot but not running
Solutions
- Check the start relay — remove the relay from the compressor side terminal, shake it. A rattle indicates failure. Replace the start relay before condemning the compressor — it is a $15–$30 fix.
- Test the overload protector — check for continuity; an open reading means it has tripped.
- Measure compressor windings — a technician will test resistance between the three terminals (S, C, R). Open or shorted windings confirm compressor failure.
- Replace the compressor — requires EPA-certified refrigerant handling. On units over 8–10 years old, compare repair cost to replacement cost before proceeding.
