Control Board Failure — Solutions
The main control board (PCB) is the brain of the refrigerator, managing compressor cycles, defrost, fans, ice maker, and all user interface functions. A failed board affects multiple systems simultaneously.
Signals
- Multiple seemingly unrelated faults appearing together
- Refrigerator behaves erratically or unpredictably
- Display shows random codes or is completely blank
- No response to any button presses
- Burning smell from the rear of the appliance
Solutions
- Perform a hard reset — unplug for 10 minutes. Many apparent board failures are temporary glitches.
- Visually inspect the board — carefully remove the board cover (usually at the back of the unit). Look for burnt components, swollen capacitors, or scorch marks.
- Check power supply to the board — verify correct voltage is reaching the board from the power supply.
- Replace the control board — order the exact part for your model number. The replacement board may come pre-programmed or require programming with a service tool depending on the brand.
- Consider a certified technician — if you are unsure of the diagnosis, an incorrect board replacement is an expensive mistake.
