Fridge Door Switch: Estimated Price & Replacement Labour Cost
What It Does
The door switch (or light switch) detects whether the refrigerator door is open or closed. It performs two functions: turning the interior light on when the door is opened, and disabling the evaporator or condenser fan while the door is open (to prevent warm air from being blown into the compartment).
Why It Fails
Door switches are mechanical and wear out with repeated use. They can also become sticky, get jammed with debris, or fail electrically. A broken door switch that stays in the “open” position will cause the fan to stop running even when the door is closed, leading to poor cooling.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Interior light stays on even with door closed (warms the fridge and wastes energy)
- Interior light does not come on at all
- Fan stops running when it should be operating
- Fridge takes longer to cool after door is opened
Estimated Part Cost
- Generic door switch: $5 – $20
- OEM brand switch (Whirlpool, GE, LG): $15 – $40
Estimated Labour Cost
- Labour only: $50 – $100
- Full replacement (parts + labour): $75 – $150
DIY Potential
The door switch is one of the easiest refrigerator repairs available to a competent DIYer. The switch is typically accessible by popping off a plastic trim piece inside the door frame. No refrigerant handling is involved. Always unplug the fridge before starting.
