Fridge Filter/Drier: Estimated Price & Replacement Labour Cost

The filter/drier (also called the receiver drier or accumulator drier) is a small but critical component installed in the liquid line of the refrigeration system. It performs two functions: filtering solid particles and contaminants from the refrigerant, and absorbing any moisture that could freeze and block the capillary tube or damage the compressor.

Why It Fails / When It’s Replaced

The filter/drier does not fail in the traditional sense — it becomes saturated over time. More importantly, it must be replaced any time the sealed system is opened for any reason (compressor, coil, or capillary tube replacement). Failure to replace it leaves moisture in the system, which will cause the new repair to fail.

Signs It Needs Attention

  • System opened for another repair (mandatory replacement)
  • Capillary tube blockage caused by moisture freeze
  • Inefficient cooling despite all other components functioning correctly

Estimated Part Cost

  • Generic domestic fridge filter/drier: $5 – $25
  • OEM brand-specific filter/drier (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool): $15 – $50

Estimated Labour Cost

  • The filter/drier is rarely replaced in isolation. When paired with other sealed-system work:
  • Standalone replacement (parts + labour): $250 – $500
  • When bundled with compressor or coil replacement, the drier cost is typically absorbed into the overall job cost.
