What to Check First

If you encounter a defrost system error, start by noting when the error first appeared. If it followed a power outage, the issue may resolve with a simple reset. Check for visible frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer or on food packages, as this is a clear sign of a defrost system failure. Additionally, observe whether the fridge has gradually become warmer over days or weeks, which can indicate a progressive defrost issue.

General Solutions

Perform a manual defrost by unplugging the fridge and allowing it to thaw completely for 24–48 hours. If cooling is restored afterward, the defrost system has likely failed. Identify the specific sub-fault by checking the defrost heater, thermostat, timer, or sensor individually. Remove the back panel inside the freezer to inspect the evaporator coils for ice buildup. Replace any faulty defrost components, such as the heater, thermostat, or timer, as these are all individually replaceable. On models with a mechanical defrost timer, manually advancing the timer can help determine if it is the source of the failure.
