Fridge Compressor Start Relay (PTC Relay / Overload Relay): Estimated Price & Replacement Labour Cost
What It Does
The start relay (PTC — Positive Temperature Coefficient — relay) is a small plug-in component on the side of the compressor. It provides the initial burst of power needed to start the compressor motor, then cuts out once the compressor is running at full speed.
Signs It Has Failed
- Fridge clicks every few minutes but doesn’t start cooling
- Compressor won’t start at all
- Rattling sound when you shake the relay (a broken relay will rattle)
Estimated Part Price
- Budget/generic: €5–€18
- OEM: €15–€45
Estimated Labour Cost
- 15–30 minutes
- Labour charge: €30–€70
- Total repair estimate: €35–€115
DIY Difficulty
Low. One of the easiest refrigerator repairs. The relay plugs directly onto the compressor terminals at the back of the unit. No tools required in most cases.
